The training conducted by the Maldives Library Association on Koha integrated library system has be been concluded successfully. The training was conducted from 21 to 23 April 2013 at the Villa College QI Campus Computer lab from 8:30am to 3:30pm daily.
This program is conducted as part of the nationwide digital library project initiated by the Maldives Library Association in partnership with the National Library of Maldives. Ms. Fathimath Nashfa, Mr. Ahmed Shahid, and Ms. Aminath Shiuna worked as the resource persons for this training.
The participants for Koha training 2013 is made up of library staff from a number of libraries and information service providers. Based on the feedback from previous year’s training, the instructions were narrowed down to on using Koha for library technical work instead of the software installation on Linux. Experience from previous three years’ work has shown that installation component only confuses the participants more, given the lack of exposure to the Linux operating system. Training an IT staff alongside a library staff from the same place is ideally effective, however the pace of training required for both group has considerable differences hence it training these groups separately is considered better.
The feedback from the current workshops reveals that in future more focus needs to be given to enroll people with prior knowledge with technical work at the library including cataloging and classification as well as those having some understanding of how relational databases work.
