The longest serving leader of the National Library of Maldives, Annabeela Habeeba Hussain Habeeb, was a notable writer, historian of folklore, and the first Librarian of the Maldives. She was also one of the two founding members of the Maldives Library Association (MLA) in 1987. She led the MLA as its President until the end of 2006 and served as the Advisor to the MLA from 2007 to 2012.
Habeeba Hussain Habeeb served the National Library of Maldives for over 30 years from the early 1970s
until her retirement in 2008 as the Executive Director. Library training and education in the Maldives was
initiated under her leadership, with the first long-term qualification of library and information science
introduced in 1996, as a distance education program, facilitated through a partnership between the National Library of Maldives, Maldives Library Association, and the Sri Lanka Library Association.
We will remember Habeeba Hussain Habeeb with utmost respect for her passion for books, history & culture, and her contributions to the nation and librarianship in the country.
