The onset of COVID-19 pandemic in Dec 2019 and prolonged uncertainties leading to curfew and strict lockdown measures in April 2020, as well as post-pandemic anxieties proved to be a testing time for MLA in mobilizing its members to contribute volunteer hours. With the difficulty faced in conducting Council meetings, which traditionally was expected to be conducted physically, MLA Council experienced delays in managing to host a general meeting to elect a new Council for 2020. Thereby MLA became literally inactive from June 2020 to Sept 2022. With some renewed energy in the last four months of 2022, a series of Council meetings were held to pick up speed on MLA activities and to elect a new Council. Taking these into consideration a resolution was passed by the outgoing Council on 3 December 2022 to:

  • declare 2020 a year of transiting through the movement restrictions and curfews imposed by the authorities to curb the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, taking the financial hardship many citizens felt given the disruptions to and terminations of employment experienced by many families, membership fee payment was waived for 2020, and
  • declare 2021 and 2022 as inactive years of MLA. Thereby waived the fee payment for professional members.

To end the term of office MLA Council 2018-2020 hosted 2 short professional development events on 10 Dec 2022 inviting for the first time, an MLA event where participation was possible for librarians from the other geographically dispersed islands of the Maldives.
