Today marks a historic moment in the field of library & information sciences (LIS) education in the Maldives as we celebrate the graduation of the first cohort from the Bachelor of Arts Library & Information Management (BALIM) course at the Maldives National University (MNU). This is the first course in LIS to be offered in the Maldives higher education sector accredited by Maldives Qualifications Authority as a Bachelor Degree (First Degree). This landmark achievement not only highlights the dedication and hard work of the students but also signifies a significant step forward in the professionalization and modernization of library services in our nation.

A Journey of Transformation

The journey of these pioneering graduates has been one of transformation, growth, and resilience. Initiated to address the critical need for trained library professionals in the Maldives, the Bachelor of Arts Library & Information Management curriculum was designed at the Faculty of Arts, MNU, to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of library sciences, information management, and the latest technological advancements in the field.

Over the past few years, these students have delved into a diverse curriculum that covered everything from cataloguing and classification to digital libraries and information technology, as well as gaining the required knowledge from organizational culture, management, and educational psychology. They have learned to navigate the complexities of information retrieval, data management, and user services, information literacy, and intrapreneurship preparing them to meet the demands of modern library environments.

MLA extended its full support over the years through consultative sessions in the curriculum development process and the support in professional development opportunities exemplified with the financial support to subsidize the cost for BALIM final year students 2023 participating in the professional development study tour and workshops held in the Singapore.

Bridging the Knowledge Gap

The introduction of this degree has been a game-changer for the Maldives. Historically, our libraries have faced numerous challenges, including limited resources, outdated practices, and a lack of professionally trained staff. The Bachelor of Arts Library & Information Management degree was envisioned to bridge this knowledge gap and bring our libraries in line with global standards.

With the first batch of graduates now ready to contribute to enhance their libraries or enter the workforce, we anticipate a wave of positive change. These new professionals bring with them not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills gained through internships and hands-on projects. They are poised to transform our libraries into dynamic centers of learning and community engagement.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate this milestone, we also look forward to the future with great optimism. The impact of these graduates will be felt across the Maldives as they take on roles in public libraries, academic institutions, and various information centers. Their expertise will help to foster a culture of reading and lifelong learning, ensuring that libraries remain vital resources for education and personal growth. We anticipate stakeholders will work to ensure the required financial resources are arranged to support innovation from these students.

This graduation is not just an end but a beginning. It marks the start of a new era in which our libraries are staffed by qualified professionals who are passionate about serving their communities and advancing the field of library and information management.

A Note of Gratitude

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the graduates and their families. We also express our deepest gratitude to the faculty members, administrators, and all those who supported the program’s inception and development at the Faculty of Arts, the Maldives National University and other supporting organizations who extended support with student’s practical exposure and internship.

Today, we celebrate not just the achievements of these graduates but also the promise of a brighter future for libraries in the Maldives. Together, we will continue to build a knowledge-rich society where information is freely accessible, and libraries are the heart of our communities.

The stories of these graduates are a testament to their commitment and passion.
