The Maldives Library Association (MLA) has achieved a significant milestone by successfully offering customized training to implement the Koha Library Management System at the upcoming Kulhudhuffushi Public Library. This transformative project has empowered the Library staff with cutting-edge tools to manage their resources and services more efficiently. The training was conducted at the Kulhudhuffushi City Council by MLA Council members Ajra Rafeeq and Majidha Ali with online support from Fathimath Nashfa.

A Leap Forward in Library Management!

The project was designed with clear objectives in mind: training the staff to expertly navigate the Koha system, assisting with the seamless import of catalog records and patron data, setting up critical features such as circulation modules and borrowing rules, and introducing the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). MLA’s timely and comprehensive support ensured that these aspects of Koha were tailored to the library’s needs, including installing and customizing Z39.50 libraries and hands-on exercises in cataloging and circulation procedures.

Success at Every Turn

The Kulhudhuffushi Public Library staff demonstrated impressive initiative, having already familiarised themselves with the basics of Koha before the training began. This head start allowed them to dive into advanced features with confidence. The MLA team was particularly impressed with the staff’s quick take up of the training to successfully bulk import patron information and their technical prowess in installing Z39.50 libraries independently.

Unlocking New Potential with OPAC

One of the standout achievements was the introduction and customisation of the OPAC module. The library staff quickly grasped the benefits of this feature, which allows patrons to search the library’s catalog online, enhancing accessibility and user experience. The successful installation and brand customisation of OPAC according to the library’s need, have set a new standard for public libraries in the region.

Building Confidence Through Hands-On Learning

The hands-on exercises in cataloging and circulation during the training were instrumental in reinforcing the staff’s learning. The practical training boosted their confidence and ensured they could independently manage all aspects of Koha, from check-ins and check-outs to generating detailed reports.

Client Satisfaction & Future Outlook

The feedback from the library staff was overwhelmingly positive. They expressed gratitude for the comprehensive training and support, particularly in bulk importing and OPAC customization. The staff’s ability to handle these tasks independently is a testament to their dedication and the effectiveness of the MLA’s training program.

A Bright Future Ahead

With the successful completion of this project, the upcoming Kulhudhuffushi Public Library is now fully equipped to leverage Koha’s powerful features. The MLA recommends that the staff continue to explore Koha’s vast capabilities, staying updated with regular training sessions and self-directed learning through online resources.

This training project marks a significant step forward in enhancing library services in the Maldives, setting a strong example for other public libraries across the nation!
