This year’s library day was celebrated on 12 July by the Maldives Library Association, National Library, the University Library, and other school libraries.
The major function on the day for this year was organised by the National Library of Maldives as a joint programme with the Maldives Library Association. A special function was held at the museum building from 9:30 to 11:00 am on July 12. Guests from the National Library, the Maldives Library Association, the Maldives National University Library, Educational Development Centre, Ministry of Education as well as personnel from the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture joined the function.
The chief guest at the function was Mrs. Habeeba Hussain Habeeb, the former Executive Director General of the National Library.
The main events of the day was the official launch of the Maldives Digital Library website, the launching of the MLA silver jubilee commemorative publication “Progress of the Maldives Library and Information Sector”.
The Maldives Digital Library is an initiative of the Maldives Library Association with the support of the National Library, the Educational Development Centre and the National Centre for Information Technology. The Digital Library is accessible from http://library.egov.mv
The MLA publication is a one of a kind reference resource about the Association’s progress through its 25 years of existence. Moreover, it is also a historical timeline of the Maldives Library sector with scholarly article contributions from the practicing professional library staff body of the nation.

The Library Day was also made memorable by an increase in the member number of the registered members of the Association. The Advanced Certificate in Library and Information Services students at the Faculty of Arts, the Maldives National University became members along with their expatriate lecturer Mrs. Deepali Talagala. This was a welcome gesture given the small member base of the Association at present. A hearty thank you goes to the effort.
The ACLIS students also presented the University Central Library and the Maldives Library Association with some posters and bookmarks made especially for the library day.
Among the activities of the University Library included free book distribution.

I can only recognise Habeeba Hussain Habeeb.
In a sense Habeeba is the pioneer of library movement in the Maldives. She has been the person heading the National Library from its inception over 60 years ago, until her retirement around 2009. So yes, I believe everyone rightly recognizes her.
